Yay! I mean, Oh No! It just panicked and managed to produce the
diagnostic message. This time elicited by 'cvs', but it took a while to
manifest. Extracting, say, "etc.tgz" to an ext2fs destination will provoke
the failure almost instantly.

Message is:

panic: kernel diagnostic assertion "vp->v_type == VREG" failed: file "/x/current/src/sys/ufs/ext2fs/ext2fs_readwrite.c", line 286
kernel: breakpoint trap

My keystrokes at DDB's prompt seem to go ignored until I switch virtual
terminals with Ctrl-Alt-Fn and back.
