OK, thanks!  I appreciate the CPU time and effort.

there are syntax errors when I try and config GENERIC that I've not  
resolved yet.  I did do an adjustkernel first which may have messed  
things up.

I'll let you know how the newer restore CD goes for me.  thanks again!
