When I was compiling my kernel last night I tried: 

lcd0		at mainbus? 

but when  I did config MYKERNEL i got a  stop error, can't remember exactly 
what it said though... 

More feedback please!!!!! 

All I know is the hd44780 patch is supposedly no longer required.
