Looking at dmesg output earlier this week, I saw that now a com0 was 
attached. And indeed I can now use a serial console. This is with 2.0RC4. 
The only thing that changed (that could be related?) since I last tried to 
use the serial port is that I now use the bootloader instead of letting 
the firmware load the kernel directly. Maybe something to try if you 
don't already...

No idea if it's related but I can't seem to crash the system anymore by 
ftp'ing.
