Alas, no luck yet.  Dennis C. was kind enough to set up a CD with DMA
disabled kernels, but the symptoms were the same.

I'll try again as soon as I've created a serial console module for my
headless wonder.

Thanks for the help so far.  I'll post an update as soon as I've set up
the console.
