sorry to come back with my problem of building xemacs which I realy need.
So far:

1) the binary version doesn't start
2) make in /usr/pksrc/xemacs
gives the following error:
==> xemacs-21.1.14nb4 is not available for NetBSD-1.6-mipsel
*** Error code 1

Stop.
make: stopped in /usr/pkgsrc/editors/xemacs

3) make in xemacs-current
hangs when building gdbm-1.83 with

install -c -o root -g wheel -m 444 ./gdbm.info  /usr/pkg/info/gdbm.info
/usr/bin/install-info --info-dir=/usr/pkg/info /usr/pkg/info/gdbm.info
install-info: /usr/pkg/info/dir: empty file
*** Error code 1

Stop.
make: stopped in /usr/pkgsrc/databases/gdbm
*** Error code 1

I also trie dto build xemacs in my local directory downloaded from xemacs.org
in which case configure doesn't know the cobalt.

I tried to do
./configure --type=mipsel

but configure says --type option not available.

It would be great if someone has the knowlege and time to help me building 
xemacs
