I've only got 16MB in the Cobalt Qube2, so that's not it. I found
something on the net that NeXTStep doesn't support larger than 1024 byte
read & write sizes for NFS, so I changed my fstab to this:
#/etc/fstab
10.0.1.205:/export/bsdqube/root / nfs rw,-r=1024,-w=1024 0 0
10.0.1.205:/export/bsdqube/usr /usr nfs rw,-r=1024,-w=1024 0 0
10.0.1.205:/export/bsdqube/home /home nfs rw,-r=1024,-w=1024 0 0
/swap none swap sw,-r=1024,-w=1024
and that fixed the problem.
