Have just tried booting -current on a real cats, it didn't even load the
data segment of the kernel.

Mine still has the original firmware so needs an a.out kernel, maybe
something has broken in objcopy. >

More likely that GENERIC got too fat again and you hit the firmware size
limit. Try trimming down the kernel, please.
