Interesting; you run into exactly the same trouble as I do.
I had to untar the archives from my MO drive to get them onto
a BSD filesystem (btw: what stands ufs for?):

 % cd /mnt/usr/distrib; tar xf /dev/sd2c

If you already have an /etc/fstab, you can simply try to "mount /", but
without..... :-(
