and taking another 10 mins I find that I'm wrong in what I say above.  my 
kernel build dir does find the right header file.  It appears I was looking 
at an old .depend file with the wrong info in, it does correctly find the 
machine/asm.h file.

When you say clean build dir how clean do you mean?  a new dir?

How up to date is your config program?

Would it be possible for you to do a config into a new dir, and tar it up so 
I can see what you're getting.
