Not a silly question to me... That was the problem.  Thanks.  I've managed to
partially install a system, but not getting very far just yet with
configuring it, I've got a read only file system which does not boot without
me telling it the root device.

I'm going to run the install kernel again tomorrow I think.

The system only appears to boot correctly in 640x480 modes, is this right?
