I think it depends on the version of RISC OS you are running.  IIRC, to 
boot from the root partition, RISC OS has to be able to read it, which 
means that the entirety of your root partition must be within the range 
that RISC OS can read.  Other partitions can be anywhere on the disk, 
unless you want to be able to mount them from within RISC OS.
