Hmm. I have no problems with it with NetBSD/arm32 1.4J and Xvidc as X server.
(using xauth via ssh generally but I have tried xhost as well).

The /exact/ error message may be usefull here :-)
Maybe this is just a problem with the X libraries on the remote site.

run tcpdump to see if X11 packets come to your Xserver at all. If not,
look for problems at the remote site. If only one packet comes and
then everything stops, theres a problem with your X authentication.
