I did something very similar, and it worked okay (I chickened out and got
myself a new IDE disk, set this up as wd1, untarred the sets to it, then
reconfigured the CATS firmware to boot from wd1).

What you describe sounds familiar though - did you remember to MAKEDEV the
/dev files?

I also recall doing some fiddling with /etc/ttys (ISTR that as distributed
it lists old ttyv? terminals as well as (instead of?) the ttys that one
needs for wscons). It sounds like you haven't got far enough to worry
about that yet though!
