Well I tried one of Panasonic's 2.6GB/5.2GB DVD-RAM drives. It was okays as 
a CD-ROM compatible device but the kernel was unable to detect it as a direct 
access device. Unfortunately I no longer have access to the drive to 
experiment with it more.
