Not being particularly au fait (!) with this sort of thing, I guess this
means I should mount it as /dev/sd0h ... (Tried that just now: got a more
meaningful message on console ...) 

sd0: no disklabel
sd0:(wdc0:1): non-media hardware failure

Is this a case of 'send it back, it doesn't work!' ?

(Only problem is, it's been sitting in the machine for ages waiting for me
to get round to playing with it (and getting some discs!) - I wonder if
the supplier will be understanding... probably not :( )
