Subject: Can not run XEmacs after installing UVM.

Hi there.

I have recently downloaded the UVM-binaries from june 1998. As I did
not know how they would work I decided to install them in a special
way to be able to uninstall them, if they did not work out to my
satisfaction.

Before the upgrade I was running NetBSD/arm32 v1.3a. What I did was to
rename /netbsd to /netbsd.v13a, install the UVM version of netbsd as
/netbsd.UVM and create a symbolic link from /netbsd to /netbsd.UVM.
Likewise I renamed /usr/lib and /usr/libexec to v13a-directories,
installed the UVM versions as lib[exec].UVM and again created symbolic
links to the .UVM directories. Regarding the device-files I simply
made a tar-copy of the v13a /dev files and installed the UVM-version
device files instead. All the UVM binaries were put in the directories

/UVM/bin
/UVM/sbin
/UVM/usr/bin
/UVM/usr/sbin
etc..

In the file /etc/profile I inserted the above directories first in
the path. This might not be the right way to do it, as I think some
of the system tasks (swapper, init, pagedaemon, syslogd etc.) still
run the v1.3a binaries. But at least it is reasonably easy to switch
between v1.3alfa and v1.3F(UVM).

However this has left me in a state where I cannot use some parts of
XEmacs v19.15. It starts allright, but on the welcome page the
colour of XEmacs is in grey and not in full blue. There are no error
messages given.

If I the try to start the mail or news packages of XEmacs I get the
following errors:

Loading vm (message is only shown when starting mail, not news!)
remove-message-hook-error: (error Memory exhausted)
Memory exhausted

The memory exhausted message is also shown if I try to execute a
command like show buffers (^X^B).

The big problem is that this error is still present if I switch back
to NetBSD/arm32 v1.3a, thus leaving it nearly impossible for me to
follow up on mail as XEmacs saves it in a special format not compatible
with other mail readers I have access to.

Does anybody know what is causing this problem and how to solve it?

Best regards
   Ib-Michael
