I have also wondered at this.

Anyway, I am currently running PMAX, NetBSD on a DecStation 3100,
and use a single disk as the / partition, without swap or anything else.
It works nicely, even through powerfailures, so far.

(I started using NetBSD on a DEC instead of RiscPC due to all the problems
 with the 1.3 releas on ARM. They have this neat program: sysinst)
