There appear to be problems with LP64 hosts and ILP32 targets in gcc 2.95.x;
this also affected an alpha host and mips target.

I'm not sure what the issue is, yet, but I'll have the Alpha up and running
this weekend and should be able to look into it on Monday.  Some others have
said that they'll be looking at it, too....

Thanks for the extensive bug report; that should help track down the
problem.
