I agree.  The Linux/MIPS people hit this same problem and did the same
thing that the NetBSD/pica port did, btw.

A lot of the reason for that was stated at the time as buggy arc
bioses that were barely good enough for the microsoft installer to
run, but not much better than that.  And even then they were buggy
with the microsoft installer :-(
