1.6ish has NKMEMPAGES, measured in PAGE_SIZE (8k on Amiga) chunks. I don't
remember what 1.5 used.

Other than try a 1.6-ish or 2.0-ish system first? 

Hm, there is a discussion of a very large drives problem on tech-kern,
with the subject line "NetBSD, apple fibre-channel card & 2.8TB Xserve-RAID";
read up there, maybe there's some insight.
