The system I was using is in Phoenix (and I am in Los Angeles), and is
powered off. But it was the very latest current binaries from
releng.netbsd.org (200312160000) at the time, so it was gcc 3.3.2 and
whatever binutils is in current.

When that system makes its way to Phoenix, I'll try again with that patch
mentioned in the discussion.
