In fact that seems like an awful long time.

Modern PC hard disks should do that in under 2 seconds, and even older
Amiga disks are often a lot faster than what you wrote. This is a
streaming transfer, i. e. only consecutive blocks are written directly
to the disk, which usually goes about as fast as the disk's hardware
will allow.

This is below 1MB/s only for _really_ old disks, which are usually
also so small that you would not want to install NetBSD on them.
