To my knowledge, it should be save for 1.4.2 (as in: it will not set
the clean flag, but leave the filesystem structure intact).

It will not, however, work with soft dependencies. Well, at least it might
reset the soft dependency enabled bit in the superblock, because it doesn't
know about it.
