I reported this problem *a while* ago, for since 1.3.1 this problem
occured, but noone believed me. 
I also mentioned that I'm NOT of the opinion that this is a problem that
only comes from the X server or from my *old* PicassoII+ :-).
I got the same trash on the screen when a floppy disk read error occured, 
so it seems you've got to dig in the kernel for the error.
