The format is:
1st sample left channel,
1st sample right channel,
2nd sample left,
2nd sample right, etc...

For 16bit, 2 bytes left, 2 bytes right.
You can set the mode to bigendian byte first or little endian byte first.

(for 4 8bit channels: 1 left, 1 right, 1 right, 1 left, as wired by the
 hardware).

This should be obvious from "man 4 audio".
