X11 install

Hi,
I read that someone had:

...and so I went and got the list for p4 modes but my X11 still doesn't
show.
First I get some garbage on screen, then I get an empty screen
with 'cirrus' in the upper right corner and a nonblinking cursor in
the bottom left corner and nothing happens.

What am I missing?

( I succesfully installed 1.3.3 then got X11R6.1 and followed the guide,
1.3.3 seems to have its own ld.so.conf - so this was the only change:
I put paths to x11 there, instead of rc.local )
