Problems installaing 1.3.3

Hi There!
   I'm new to this, but I hope someone can help me out here:
I have installed the 1.3.3 version of NetBSD, without any problems. I have
extracted all the bases (base,man,misc,text,etc,comp,games, xbas, xcomp,
xcintrib, xserver, xfont) and I'm about to edit the configuration files:

/etc/sendmail.cf
/etc/rc.conf

but when I try to load the vi editor I get the message

ex/vi: error: no such file or directory,  or similar errormessage. -can't
remember the exact words.
What has gone wrong here?
