 Main reason: Security reasons. You want to use the super user account
only when installing system- or security-related stuff. All the rest,
ie. /usr/pkg/ should be installed as member of the group "wheel" - 
that's what this group is for.

 It is avery good habbit to use "su". It might be less quick to become
root, but is way more secure.

 Same applies to "telnet" and "ftp" as root - both logins are blocked by
default.
