In order for the window manager (or any other X client)
to do you any good, you need to;

a) Have a running X11 server available
b) Make sure the environment points at this server

Usually,

% setenv DISPLAY :0.0
(csh,tcsh)

or

$ export DISPLAY=:0.0
(sh,bash,zsh,ksh)

Will suffice (although these env-vars should be set already by the xterm..)

Also,

% fvwm2 -display :0.0

Should cut it.

Indeed the easiest might just be to put 'fvwm2' in your .xinitrc or .xsession
file, thus it will launch every time you launch X, or login via xdm.

See X(1), Xserver(1), xinit(1), xdm(1)
