The 'proper' way to refer to this would be "free Unix-like operating systems."

Unix is the description of the type of OS, you don't have plurals of
descriptions.  Just like there is no plural of 'VAX,' instead you talk
about 'VAX systems' or 'VAX computers,' not 'VAXen.' =)  Sorry, pet
peeve.
