 There is a high probability that the drive has wrong DOS-Types or NetBSD's
different way to count devices buggers you.

 What does "disklabel sd1" tells you? Does "dmesg" lists the drive
correctly as sd1 ?

 Oh, and BTW, newfs requires /dev/rsd1a
