Actually, in all honesty & stupidity, I remembered to take a look, and 
noticed that I have COPTS=-m68040 setenv'd .. this conflicted, 
apparently, and seems to compile up & work fine (using the compiled 
kernel now) once I removed the COPTS env variable.
