I have used NetBSD-1.2_ALPHA (or was it -1.1B then?) with up to 
72 MB (on a DraCo, doing e.g. full kernel builds), and booted the same 
machine with 32 MB the day before yesterday.

My own machine (A3000 with '030) works fine with full 16 MB of fastmem.

You should be more precise in your reports... the error is probably something
else.
