ntpd oddity

Two identical servers running 8.0 RC1, OS loaded from the same media a
few hours apart.   On one ntpd runs without issues.   On the other I
get:

# ntpd
could not load libm387.so.0 for libm.so.0

I checked, and can't find any differences in the symbolic links or the
files ultimately pointed to.

Where to start looking?
