I was able to get booting the BIOS USB image to work... I think the
kernel loaded, but the BIOS serial console redirection stopped working
so it looked like it hung? In any case, I went to the boot prompt and
did "consdev com1" and was able to boot. It didn't see the USB drive I
booted off of though, but with the serial console working, I was able
to look through the kernel messages and saw that it reported some sort
of device error and disabled the USB port. I moved the USB drive to a
different port (I think it was a port closer to the root hub),
rebooted, switched to serial console, and the kernel saw the boot
device as sd1.
However, the install wasn't able to remount root read-write--it
apparently was trying to mount /dev/sd0a instead of /dev/sd1a (sd0 is
another USB flash drive that I want to install NetBSD on). I didn't
note the exact error message, but it was something to the effect of:
mount: no match for `/dev/sd0a'
/etc/fstab showed root on /dev/sd0a rather than /dev/sd1a, but sysctl
kern.root_device = sd1. Not sure what creates /etc/fstab, but
apparently it didn't do the right thing. I manually did mount -u
/dev/sd1a /, ran sysinst, and was able to install NetBSD :)
Now I just need to figure out how to create a filesystem on these
disks... apparently raidframe's RAID 6 is untested?
https://wiki.netbsd.org/projects/project/raidframe-raid6/
(I must admit that I'm probably going to end up installing FreeNAS on
this machine, but I'm a NetBSD kind of guy and wanted to see how
NetBSD fares on it :)
