Check your XFree log, maybe your monitor defines 1024x768 as preferred
mode, then XFree will refuse to use anything else unless you add this:
Option "UsePreferredMode" "false"=20
to the "Monitor" section in your XF86Config
In this case using Xorg likely won't change a thing.
