The monitor was doing 1280x1024 on the system I am in front of for at least
a year. I replaced it with a larger LCD monitor.
The system I'm on is:
NetBSD toad 1.6.1 NetBSD 1.6.1 (TOAD) #1: Wed Apr 7 20:31:37 MDT 2004 rmk@toad:/usr/src/sys/arch/i386/compile/TOAD i386
The card is:
vga1 at pci1 dev 0 function 0: ATI Technologies Rage Fury MAXX AGP 4x (TMDS) (rev. 0x00)
The other box, that won't do 1280x1024 is a:
vga0 at pci1 dev 6 function 0: ATI Technologies Radeon 9200 Pro (rev. 0x01)
It looks like XFree86 doesn't it except as anonymous VGA.
There are basically two makers of video chips these days, nvidia and ati,
and modern cards don't seem to be supported by X anymore.
