Hi,

I recently tried to install NetBSD 3.0 on my Athlon64 box (nForce4
chipset), and I stumbled across the same problems as others with my
SATA hard disk. Fortunately (thanks, guys ;-)) the archives of this
mailing list indicated several possible solutions :

=2D try NetBSD -current
=2D try disabling APIC support in BIOS
=2D try disabling unused SATA and PATA ports in BIOS

So I burnt a -current amd64 install CD (daily built 200601040000Z),
and I made a few tests the result of which I thought might be useful
to others. To test whether the drive works: I boot from the install
CD, I quit installation, I first try `fdisk wd0', and then I try to
mount a FAT32 partition and to copy large directories. I also recorded
the output of dmesg on an USB key before trying to access the drive.


* In my standard BIOS configuration, with APIC enabled and all PATA
  and SATA ports enabled, I get the following message when I try to
  access the hard drive (sometimes with different tc_bcount):

    viaide2:0:0: lost interrupt
                 type ata, tc_bcount: 0, tc_skip: 0

  Usually, I get the error message at the first attempt to read
  from the drive, or after a few attempts (fdisk wd0). This happens
  both in 3.0 and -current.

* When I take my standard BIOS configuration and just disable APIC,
  then the problem disappears (both in 3.0 and -current).

* When I take my standard BIOS configuration and just disable SATA
  ports 3 and 4 (there are two SATA controllers in the nForce4) then
  the problem disappears (both in 3.0 and -current).
  I also successfully installed from the 3.0 CD in this BIOS config.


Hardware : Athlon64 3200+ (Venice)
           Asus A8N-SLI Premium (nForce4 SLI), BIOS ver. 1009
           Hitachi T7K250 in SATA 3.0Gb/s mode, on SATA1 port
           DVD reader and writer as masters on both IDE channels


In case somebody is interested, I attach dmesg outputs for all three
tests with -current. The dmesg diffs between the three tests are the
same with 3.0. BTW, I was surprised to see that the IRQs were the
same with APIC enabled and disabled.
