With one week of delay, I have finally compiled a 3.0_BETA kernel for
the ASUS L3 laptop.

Indeed, with 3.0, ACPI related problems on this machine (NOT an amd64,
an i386---Intel Pentium IV) are gone. So it may be worth trying on a
ASUS with AMD64 to see if this is ACPI related and not port amd64
related.
