Size limit of GENERIC alpha kernel?

hi,

My PC164SX became unstable updating from an April 18 kernel to May 02.
Symptoms are rc.d scripts random segfaults and the build.sh shell
hangs during fork. Userland is still from last year.

So I tried to bisect the regression and it started misbehaving when
viaide.c r1.97 was applied. This makes no sense because the machine does
not have a viaide(4) adapter.

I moved back to HEAD and removed some unused filesystems and
pseudo-devices from GENERIC and now it is much happier.

Is there any known limit of kernel size on this platform? If not maybe
the RAM went bad and the size happens to tickle it in an unfortunate way.
