OK, if it goes that far it is a getty(8) and no kernel problem. Maybe
getty(8) requires some handshake lines (RTS/CTS or DTR/DSR/DCD) that are
not connected in your serial cable. Make sure that this signals are
shortend in the conectors on each side. (One connection from RTS to CTS
an an other between DTR/DSR/DCD.)
