Hi Folks,
As many on this list know i have been active in helping to
get XFree86 to run on Alpha boxes running NetBSD. XFree86 is/was from
the ground up designed around the i386 arch. There are only a few alphas
emulating a pci bus structure similar to the i386.
These are: PWS's(433/500/600), 164LX, AS800/AS1000/, AS500/600,
possibly the AS200/400. Changes required in the kernel file are those
'Normally' used on the i386 arch for boxes running XFree86.
I have just finished work on XFree86-4.3.99.5(pre-4.4.0). Several
problems on my test box(164LX) running 4.3.0 have been fixed, these are:
1)Nvidia card: return to text mode is white text on blue screen.
(not black on black -glint card may return as well on PWS)
2)Font choices are stable true type1 or speedo fonts are usable,
X server is stable, no commenting out of fonts required in
/etc/X11/XF86Config file.
Interesting to those planning the use of this code is the 'HUGE'
number of supported cards(ATI/Nvidia), i include my dmesg and
XFree86.0.log files.( almost begs the development of agp->pci connector
to allow agp cards to be used).
FWIW -xdm does not work, not because of alternate virtual console use
but because code is broken:
