Another thought -- all my in-tree X code was built using a config/cf/hosts.def 
file that includes Perl and Gperf from pkgsrc:

#define HasPerl 1
#define HasGperf 1

...I don't know what the benefits are to adding Perl to the build (it seemed 
like a good idea at the time), but it is clear that it's doing something to 
the font directories.  Perhaps additional character sets are built into Speedo 
and Type1 using perl that need to be there...
