Maybe it's dependant on the video adapter

I started with an empty /usr/X11R6, rebuild XF4.3.0 from scratch, and then
all the packages.

I'd prefer to stay with 1.6 on this box for now (run the same version
as on my production servers).

OK. With this I do get the sig 11/machine check.
Just commenting out the Speedo & Type1 prevents it.
