What are the exact errors that you are seeing? To send these to
the list do something like:

	# startx 2>&1 | tee errors.file

and mail us errors.file.

Which X server is it trying to run? Is /usr/X11R6/bin/X a symlink
and if so to what? What is the exact dmesg line for you tga card?

I haven't run X on the TGA cards in quite a long time, so I am
downloading the 1.6 xsets to see if there is any problem with the
X server. My X server is rather long in the tooth at the moment
although I've kept the kernel and userland current. Okay, I've
installed the 1.6 X sets in their entirety and startx just works
as does xdm [on my PWS500a.] It used to work on my AS 200 4/233's
and my Multia's as well.

I think that it is possible that you have overwritten some of our
old X with XF86 4.x and that may cause problems. But, if we can
have a look at the error messages and dmesg output it will be a
lot easier to diagnose the issues here.

What I see in the 1.6 xserver.tgz set is:
lrwxr-xr-x  1 root     wheel          0 Sep 21 18:46 ./usr/X11R6/bin/X -> XalphaNetBSD
-r-xr-xr-x 1 root wheel 2984944 Sep 21 18:46 ./usr/X11R6/bin/XalphaNetBSD
-r-xr-xr-x 1 root wheel 3139816 Sep 21 18:46 ./usr/X11R6/bin/Xprt
-r--r--r-- 1 root wheel 90112 Sep 21 18:45 ./usr/X11R6/lib/X11/rgb.db
drwxr-xr-x 2 root wheel 0 Sep 21 18:46 ./usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xserver
-r--r--r-- 1 root wheel 2929 Sep 21 18:46 ./usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xserver/SecurityPolicy
-r--r--r-- 1 root wheel 30930 Sep 21 18:46 ./usr/X11R6/man/cat1/Xserver.0
tar: ustar vol 1, 7 files, 6256640 bytes read, 0 bytes written in 1 secs (6256640 bytes/sec)

So, I don't think that 1.6 has transitioned to XdecNetBSD, although
I think that -current has.

No, you don't need anything related to inetd.

No, if it works then the shipped kernel should do it.

Yes, but I was probably one of the ones that mentioned that...

Thanks,
