One could always try the RAW_PART partition; 'c' on alpha, 'd' on
i386.

I'm having another problem with the same camera on NetBSD 1.5.3 on
i386. When I plug it in, I get

umass0 at uhub0 port 1 configuration 1 interface 0
umass0: OLYMPUS C-40Z/D-40Z, rev 1.10/1.00, addr 2
umass0: using SCSI over BBB-P

and nothing else, i.e. no scsibus and no sd. Is this a known problem?
Is there something I need to do to have the bus appear?
