The GENERIC kernel config does not include the ss(4) device. If you add
the following line to your kernel config file and make a new kernel,
your scanner should be supported.

ss* at scsibus? target ? lun ? # SCSI scanners

(If you have only 64 MB RAM, you may want to use TCWSCONS as a basis for
your kernel config file instead of GENERIC, which includes PCI, USB, et
al. support [none of which is present on the DEC 3000/300].)

Paul.
