Well, OSX gives you a BSD-based OS (Darwin is based on FreeBSD) with 
the elegance of MacOS. Aqua/Quartz is definitely "something other 
than a run-of-the-mill window manager". The "Fink" project at 
sourceforge is similar to NetBSD's packages collection.
