Thanks for everyone's input.

It appears the drive I have in the box is the RRD42 (SONY CDU-541). I'll
pick up a caddy for it sometime through the week. I tried replacing it
with a Toshiba XM-5701b which is reported to work in a lot of DECs. In
fact, the DEC RRD46 is actually that very device...HOWEVER...

It appears that there a number of versions of the XM-5701b firmware and
that there's no way to manually switch the block size on these devices.
At least this was what I could learn on the archived <cough>Sun<cough>
newsgroups...

Apparently some of the DEC-badged Toshibas state on the label that
swapping the PRTY jumper will switch between workstation/PC block mode
but this didn't appear to work either.

Every time I try to boot from the drive using Bucketmouth's cdhdtape
image, it gets to AUDIT_BOOT_STARTS... then I lose everything.

This is a 3000/400 with old firmware (rev 2.4). Anyone suggest if an
update is likely to help. The SROM is version 1.0
